The World Championship is the most prestigious League of Legends Esports tournament in the world. It marks the conclusion of the regular League of Legends competitive season and is contested by teams from the 12 regional leagues. Held annually since 2011, the League of Legends World Championship is the most widely viewed and followed esport competition, and it is among the biggest gaming and sporting events in the world. Beyond the championship title, teams compete for the 70-pound Summoner’s Cup, a multi-million dollar prize pool, and in-game skins. The 2020 Season World Championship (Worlds 2020) is the conclusion of the 2020 League of Legends esports season. The tournament was held in Shanghai, China. Overview Format. 24 teams are invited: Show. 2021 World Championship. The 2020 World Championship is the crowning event of League of Legends esports for the year. The tournament welcomes 22 teams from all regions of the game in a months-long race for the Summoner’s Cup. This year’s world championship will be held exclusively in Shanghai, China to reduce travel throughout the tournament and control the show environment under the coronavirus pandemic.
The past nine World Championship tournaments have been won by four regions, once each by Europe (LEC) and Taiwan (LMS), twice by China (LPL), and five times by South Korea (LCK). Seven different teams from the respective regions have been awarded the Summoner’s Cup: Fnatic, Taipei Assassins, SK Telecom T1 (3 wins), Samsung Galaxy (2 wins), Invictus Gaming, and FunPlus Phoenix. Four regions -- Europe, North America, China and South Korea -- have all hosted the World Championship, and seven countries have hosted the Worlds finals, including Sweden, the United States, Korea, Germany, China and France, with the United States hosting three times and Korea twice.
Qualifying, Play-In & Group Stages
A region’s seeds are based on past international performance. Consistently strong regions send some or all of their seeds straight to the Group Stage, whereas other regions receive fewer seeds and/or start in the Play-In Stage.Twelve (12) teams receive direct invites to the Group Stage:
- The top three seeds from China (LPL)
- The top two seeds from South Korea (LCK), Europe (LEC), North America (LCS), and East Asia - Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan (LMS)
- The top seed from Vietnam (VCS)
World Track And Field Results
The top four (4) teams from the Play-In Stage, which includes the #3 seed from LCK, LEC, LCS, and LMK, the #2 seed from VCS, and the top team from Brazil (CBLoL), Commonwealth of Independent States (LCL), Japan (LJL), Latain America (LLA), Oceania (OPL), Southeast Asia (LST) and Turkey (TCL), will also move into the Group Stage.Knock-Out Stage
The top 8 teams from Group Stage advance to the Knock-Out Stage, which encompasses Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals. For this stage, the tournament transitions to a single-elimination bracket with all matches played in a best-of-five format. The team that comes out on top will earn the coveted World Championship title.Anthem & Opening Ceremony
The World Championship is widely known for its innovative Opening Ceremony, which combines the latest in entertainment, sports, and technology to create iconic, must-see experiences. Such experiences include the augmented reality dragon that flew over the sold-out stadium in Beijing during the 2017 Worlds Opening Ceremony and the creation of K/DA, a virtual K-POP group consisting of four themed League of Legends champions in 2018. The band debuted at the 2018 Worlds Opening Ceremony via an augmented reality performance with the real-life vocalists. K/DA’s leading single, POPSTARS, surpassed 100 million views in one month and topped the Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. True Damage, the 'sequel' to K/DA, performed at the Opening Ceremony for the 2019 World Championship Final.
Released annually since 2014, Riot Games produces a musical anthem leading into Worlds in collaboration with popular musical artists. Over the years, these have included Imagine Dragons, The Glitch Mob, and Against the Current.

While the World Championship is the peak of competitive League of Legends, leading up to the event dozens of regional, challenger, national, and scholastic programs offered organized competitions to players aspiring to reach the biggest stage in esports. In 2019, 36 different cities hosted more than 60 unique events, offering fans and players the opportunity to experience League of Legends esports.
